About our clinic

A proud history of supporting women’s health

The original group of doctors who formed what is now called the South Side Women’s Health Centre came together in the 1950s in the midst of a post-war baby boom. The clinic was originally based out of the Edmonton General Hospital in downtown Edmonton and was led by Drs. Bell, Smith, Gans, Uretsky and Schuurmans. As new doctors came on board and others retired, the clinic eventually relocated to serve the new Grey Nuns Hospital in 1988 – surpassing its five-year delivery target in the first year!

Many of the Centre’s staff have been with the clinic for many years – including Grace who has been with our team for 30 years – and two of the Centre’s doctors (Drs. Michael Bow and Tom Corbett) have been practicing with the clinic since 1990. Over the course of its history, two of the clinic’s doctors - Drs. Nan Schuurmans and Michael Bow - have served as Presidents of the  Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC).

We’re extremely proud of our long history of advancing and supporting women’s health in the Edmonton area.
